Activity - Natural dye for homemade Play Dough

Photo from FreePeople

In the previous post we learned how to make homemade Play Dough, completely non-toxic, but colored with food coloring. In this post we will learn how to color the Play Dough using plants and vegetables, thus making it completely natural.
Replace the 4 cups of water of the normal mix of Play Dough with colored liquid obtained from the recipes below. Experiment by substituting 1 to 4 glasses of water with the dye, for a more or less vivid color and get the shade of color you like. But when you add the powder, use the normal recipe of Play Dough, adding 1-3 teaspoons of spice and, if the mixture becomes too hard, add another bit of water.
For the white, let the dough natural.

Activity - Homemade Play Dough

Photo from adelynStone
This recipe is non-toxic and inexpensive and will allow you to spend time with your children.
With this game your kids will learn about colors and use their imagination.
"The polymer clay involve and stimulate the different senses of the child: sight, touch and smell," says psychologist Silvia Capone, expert on creative intelligence. It is not a trivial matter, "Leonardo Da Vinci claimed that the development of sensory intelligence is the foundation of a healthy growth of creative intelligence, that is, the ability to invent, discover, imagine, find new solutions where traditional knowledge is insufficient. "

You need:
Photo from Art Nest
  • 5 cups of  flour
  • 3 cups of salt
  • 4 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of Cream of Tarter (it is a leavening agent, you finds him in a pharmacy)
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • food coloring
  • Optional: few drops of essential oil or a teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Optional: small sealable containers - only if storing
What to do:
  1. Combine flour, water, cream of tartar, vanilla, in small saucepan and mix until all combined.
  2. Add food coloring of your choice and continue stirring.
  3. Pour the mixture into a nonstick pan and stir over low heat, and mix with a wooden spoon. It will form lumps, but continue to stir until you have a big clump of Play Dough.
  4. Remove from heat and knead by hand.
  5. That's it! Now it remains only to go wild with your imagination!

Now you can let your children play. To make it even more fun this game, give him even a rolling pin and cookie cutters.. It will be a success!

**Note:
    • If you want to preserve the Play Dough I suggest you wrap it in plastic wrap and store in tightly closed containers.
    • Once you've created your objects you can let them dry and harden.
    • I only remember that while it is not toxic, it is NOT EDIBLE.

Photo from Kids Craft Fun and Games

Today a wonderful activity to do with your kids..

This wonderful recipe lets you to use natural colors, non-toxic and to entertain your kids without using paint made with funky chemicals. Painting with finger is an activity suitable also for toddlers, it stimulates fantasy and creativity and help them to learn colors.
These paints are extremely easy to clean, are completely washable and do not stain clothing and it stimulates the different senses of the child: sight, touch and smell.
      Let's start with the recipe.

      finger paint
      Photo from EasiePeasie Blog
      You need:
      • 1/2 cup cornflour / cornstarch
      • 2 cups water + extra for thinner paint
      • 1/2 tablespoon salt
      • 3 tablespoon of sugar
      • food colouring or tempera paint powder
      • Optional: 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid
      • Optional: few drops of essential oil
      • Optional: small sealable containers - only if storing (EasiePeasie blog suggest to use left-over baby food jars for containers)
      What To Do:
      1. Combine sugar, salt, cornstarch in small saucepan. Add water slowly. Mix with a whisk until all combined.
      2. Turn on the heat (gentle heat), mixing with a whisk to combine and prevent lumps.
      3. Whisk continuously until paint mixture starts to thicken and then continue mixing with a wooden spoon.
      4. Once paint mixture is thick and smooth remove from the heat.
      5. Allow to cool.
      6. Once cooled, mix in the dishwashing liquid - optional. It will give the paint a smoother consistency and a glossy finish when dry.
      7. Separate the paint into small containers and colour with small amounts of either food colouring or tempera paint. If using tempera paint powder add a little more water to combine.

      **Please note:
      • If you add too much cornstarch you will get gloppy paint. Just reduce cornstarch or thin with water for a smoother texture.
      • Adding a few drops of dishwashing liquid to finger paint will give it a smoother consistency, and a glossy finish when dry.
      • For extra sensory stimulation - add texture such as sand to finger paint...OR
      • Add a few drops of essential oil - such as orange or peppermint - for beautiful smelling paint.

**Remember: Even if this is a non-toxic paint, it is NOT EDIBLE.
